Questionnaire for poster

After having conducted secondary research, in regards to creating my poster, I am also going to conduct primary research. This will enable me to find out first hands what audiences expect to find on a poster from a Horror film genre.

The questionnaire I have devised below will gather information about colour scheme, certificate, image, font, release date, and setting which will be the preferences from the audience for my type of film.

I am going to only distribute my questionnaire to Horror film fans. Before completing the questionnaire, I will ask them if they have previously seen films such as 'Sinister' or 'Saw'.

I am going to combine the research I gather from my questionnaire to the research on conventions in existing Horror posters I have previously analysed, when creating my final poster.

Questionnaire

1) What would you expect the colour scheme to be?

-Muted and dark colours, e.g. Black, Brown or dark Green
-Colourful and bright primary colours, e.g. Yellow, Orange or Pink
-Pastel colours

2) What background would you expect to see?

-Haunted house
-Isolated setting, e.g. woods
-No background
-Blood

3) What would expect a Horror films certificate to be?

-12A
-15
-18

4) Would you expect to see a tagline?

-Yes
-No
-Not sure

5) Are actors names often include outside of the billing?

-Yes
-No
-Not sure

6) Would you expect to see reviews on the poster, e.g. Daily Mail reviews

-For certain
-Only sometimes
-Never

7) Which font case would you expect the title to be in?

-Upper case
-Lower case

8) Which season would you expect a horror film to be released in?

-Summer
-Winter
-Autumn
-Spring

9) What do you expect the dominant central image to be?

-Central protagonist
-Central antagonist
-Supernatural figure
-Character covered in blood
-Male character
-Female character

Since having completed my questionnaire and gathering all the answers, I have concluded a wide range of audience feedback. The majority of them said how they'd think it would be most effective to have the dominant central image as the central antagonist, as this character is the most powerful. A lot of them also argued that they'd expect Horror films certificates to differ between 15 and 18's, depending on the content. 80% of them argued that typical release dates of Horror films are in Autumn/winter times as this is the closest time of year to Halloween, thus making it the spookiest. A lot of them said how they didn't pay much attention to the billing or taglines, but the majority or them argued how a dark/muted colour scheme was important in clearly indicating Horror.

I will take my audience feedback into account when I am creating my poster.

Poster analysis introduction

I am going to conduct research and analysis towards the conventions of film posters. I have looked at five different posters from a variety of genres, in order to see if there are similarities within the conventions. This will help my understanding of the depth in film posters, thus benefitting me when I am making my own.  Below are the five posters, each of different genres, which I chose to analyse the conventions of: 1) La La Land  2) Spider Man  3) Insidious 2  4) Hangover 2  5) The Notebook

Magazine cover analysis introduction

After looking at the conventions of movie posters, I will now do the exact same, but for film magazine covers. Both film magazines I will be looking at are aimed at different audience and will both be for different front covers from a different film magazine. In terms of design and layout, I will be able to see if both film magazines share the same conventions.  Below are the two film magazine covers I will be analysing:

list of tools I used in software

Adobe premiere: software ALL DONE ON A PC Camera: HC-VX980 Manfrotto tripod Use of dissolves From black dissolving into next shot – slows the tone down and gives glimpses in (seems like little romantic snapshots at the start) I added an outside sound during the park shots Camera sound from the colleges sound effect library Impact sounds from BBC sound library I included a sound effect of a ring tone from BBC sound effects library instead of the apple iphone ringtone which I recorded with the shot iphone doesn’t sound like a ringtone in a trailer Fading down the volume of the music whenever there was any dialogue from the actors the music was loudest in the 3 rd part so I especially did this here Photoshop, for the film title
