Magazine questionnaire

I have conducted primary research, via questionnaire, as I want to learn more about what my audience would expect to find inside a film magazine, along with the ways in which design, layout and content would lead them to buying the magazine. I have carried out a series of questions to ask, in order to help me in designing my own magazine front cover, which audiences will be engaged with.

Below is my questionnaire:

1) Which kinds of colours would attract you to the magazine the most?

-Muted/neutral colours
-Bright colours
-Pastel colours
-Depends on genre

2) What would you expect to see on the magazines front cover?

-Image of a Hollywood star
-Image of a top film director
-The main character in an upcoming movie

3) What font would you expect the cover line to be in?

-Rounded
-Square and bold

4) Would you prefer the front cover to be dominated with writing or images?

-Writing
-Images
-Doesn't matter

5) Which part of the front cover would you expect the Mast head to feature in?

-Top
-Middle
-Bottom

6) Who would you prefer to see feature as the main cover image?

-Male
-Female
-Doesn't matter

7) What would you expect the cover lines to be mentioning?

-Well known film actors
-Top Hollywood directors
-Top films

8) Would you expect to see a strap line?

-Yes
-No
-Not sure

Results from magazine questionnaire

The results which I gathered from my audience in regards to magazine front covers matched the majority of mainstream film magazines. For instance, the majority of people said that they'd expect to see an image of a top Hollywood star on a magazines front cover. They answered this because it made them feel as though the magazine only mentions top rated films. One answer I was particularly surprised about was that most people said they'd prefer to see a female star feature on the front cover, over a male star. However, I predicted that a lot of the people I asked would say that they'd expect the mast head to feature in the top part of the magazines cover. In addition to this, the people I asked these questions to said they'd prefer the coverlines font to be bold and square, instead of rounded. I will certainly take this into consideration when designing my own. Well known actors were also voted the highest in regards to what the coverlines should be mentioning, and many people weren't sure about if they'd expect to see a strap line. Many people argued that the colours of the magazine cover was dependent on the genre of the magazine. Lastly, they'd expect a front cover to be mainly dominated with writing over images.

Poster analysis introduction

I am going to conduct research and analysis towards the conventions of film posters. I have looked at five different posters from a variety of genres, in order to see if there are similarities within the conventions. This will help my understanding of the depth in film posters, thus benefitting me when I am making my own.  Below are the five posters, each of different genres, which I chose to analyse the conventions of: 1) La La Land  2) Spider Man  3) Insidious 2  4) Hangover 2  5) The Notebook

Magazine cover analysis introduction

After looking at the conventions of movie posters, I will now do the exact same, but for film magazine covers. Both film magazines I will be looking at are aimed at different audience and will both be for different front covers from a different film magazine. In terms of design and layout, I will be able to see if both film magazines share the same conventions.  Below are the two film magazine covers I will be analysing:

list of tools I used in software

Adobe premiere: software ALL DONE ON A PC Camera: HC-VX980 Manfrotto tripod Use of dissolves From black dissolving into next shot – slows the tone down and gives glimpses in (seems like little romantic snapshots at the start) I added an outside sound during the park shots Camera sound from the colleges sound effect library Impact sounds from BBC sound library I included a sound effect of a ring tone from BBC sound effects library instead of the apple iphone ringtone which I recorded with the shot iphone doesn’t sound like a ringtone in a trailer Fading down the volume of the music whenever there was any dialogue from the actors the music was loudest in the 3 rd part so I especially did this here Photoshop, for the film title
