Evaluation - conventions of real media products

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products - Poster

In addition to creating a magazine cover and teaser trailer, I also had to create a film poster. In order to complete this, I carried out research of poster conventions from a range of different genres from films.

After completing this research, I realised that all posters have similar/the same conventions, despite the genre. For instance, they all included taglines, billing/credits, production company logo's, release date and a dominant central image, typically of stars, indicating genre.

As my chosen genre was Horror, I also conducted research into 10 different film posters, specifically for this genre. I analysed these posters in terms of font, layout, text and colour schemes ect.

This research me helped me in deciding what to include on my poster. I figured that I wanted to directly position the audience with the antagonist, in order to heighten the sensation of fear. Additionally, this meant that my poster would appear sinister and dark, like some of the existing posters which I analysed. Via using neutral colours such as white and grey, denotes a juxtapositon between innocence/purity against the dark nature of my film.

I was influenced by other film posters, of my genre, whilst deciding on the layout of my billing/credits.

I took a few potential photographs of my antagonist, for my poster. I felt as thought this was strongest as I captured a low angle shot. This presents him as sinister and powerful, clearly indicating his dangerous impact over the other characters.

Release date

Names of stars

I have included the word 'death' in my tagline, to indicate the genre to the audience. As well as this, there is a paradoxy meaning lying between the words 'love' and 'death'. For instance, it portrays the concept of love as strong as death, which could be unsettling for viewers.

A lot of the film posters I analysed clearly towards the horror genre within their film title. I wanted mine to be more subtle, in order to convey a sense of mystery to the audience.

Poster analysis introduction

I am going to conduct research and analysis towards the conventions of film posters. I have looked at five different posters from a variety of genres, in order to see if there are similarities within the conventions. This will help my understanding of the depth in film posters, thus benefitting me when I am making my own.  Below are the five posters, each of different genres, which I chose to analyse the conventions of: 1) La La Land  2) Spider Man  3) Insidious 2  4) Hangover 2  5) The Notebook

Magazine cover analysis introduction

After looking at the conventions of movie posters, I will now do the exact same, but for film magazine covers. Both film magazines I will be looking at are aimed at different audience and will both be for different front covers from a different film magazine. In terms of design and layout, I will be able to see if both film magazines share the same conventions.  Below are the two film magazine covers I will be analysing:

Evaluation - what have I learnt from my audience feedback?

Within my research and planning, I constantly had my target audience in mind. I therefore conducted several questionnaires and focus groups,  in order to gather information on what my audience expected in regards to different media texts, along with making decisions based on their feedback.  My main aim for my marketing campaign was for it to hold authenticity and realism for the audience. I questionnaires which I have included below helped me achieve this: Questionnaire for poster Questionnaire for magazine cover Questionnaire for teaser trailer Additionally, I have also conducted a series of questionnaires post production of my marketing campaign. I wanted to gather feed back from my audience to see if they felt that my poster, magazine cover and teaser trailer were sustainable, accurate and convincing.  My posters questionnaire goes as follows:  1) Was the font I used effective in portraying the nature of a horror film? If so how? 2) Did you fee...
