BBFC Research

I have conducted research into the two certificates 12/12A and 15, on the BBFC website, In order to see which is more appropriate for my film.

Below I have placed the link of the BBFC website, to which I gathered all my information from.

BBFC

In order to carry out this research, I am going to select a certificate for my film. This will enable me to gather the guidelines which I will need when I am deciding on the content which will be suitable for the certificate.

I am going to start by researching the guidelines for films with a 12/12A rating.

12/12A:

Films which have been classified 12A and video works which have been classified as a 12 all contain material which has been ruled as unsuitable for children below the age of 12 to view. Therefore, unless accompanied by an adult, anyone under the age age of 12 will be able to see a film with this rating.

Within 12/12A films, there was must be a very infrequent misuse of drugs. Moreover drugs should not be glamourised and no instructional detail must be given.

In regards to language, strong language may be permitted, however it is dependent on the manner in which it is used, along with who is using the language and the frequency in which it is used. Moreover, strong language must remain moderate throughout.

In 12/12A films, nudity is permitted, however sexual content must be brief and discreet. Similarly all sexual activity must also be discretely portrayed in a brief manner. Sex references are permitted but they must remain moderate. Furthermore, any frequent crude references are typically not permitted.

Within this age rating, any aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to acceptable, unless is have been clearly condemned. Moreover, this language or behaviour must not be endorsed by the work as a whole.

Physical and psychological threat along with horror sequences are permitted, but they must be moderate. Despite some scenes being scary or disturbing, this cannot be frequent throughout the whole tone of the film.

If moderate violence scenes occur, they cannot dwell on any detail. For instance, there shouldn't be any emphasis on blood or injuries. Moreover, if justified by the context, some gory moments may be permitted. Additionally, sexual violence may only be indicated discretely and briefly. Its depiction must also be justified by context.

Lastly, in 12A/12 films, there cannot be any promotion of potentially dangerous behaviour, which children could be likely to get influenced by. There also cannot be any glamorisation of easily accessible and realistic items, such as knives. Endorsement of anti-social behaviour is also not allowed.

I have also conducted research of the guidelines for films with a 15 rating.

15:

Films which have been classified with a 15 rating, means that no one younger than 15 is able to see a 15 film in a cinema. Moreover, no one younger than 15 will be able to rent or buy a 15 rated video work either.

In reference to drugs, it can be shown, however the work of it as a whole cannot be displayed as a promotion or influence/encourage drug misuse. Additionally, the misuse of highly dangerous and easily accessible substances are likely to be unacceptable, i.e. solvents and aerosols.

Nudity in a sexual content is permitted, however it is usually without strong detail. There are also no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

The video work as whole cannot endorse any discriminatory behaviour or language. However, racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language is permitted.

Dangerous behaviour, such as suicide, self-harm and hanging, is not allowed to dwell on any detail, which could be copied. Whether the depiction of any easily accessible weapons is acceptable is dependent on factors such as context, setting and realism.

Strong language is permitted, and very strong language is also allowed. However, this is dependent on the manner in which it is used, its frequency within the work and a whole, any special contextual justification and who is using the language.

Sexual activity, without strong detail is allowed to be portrayed. Video works whose primary purpose is sexual stimulation or arousal is likely to be unacceptable. However, strong verbal references to sexual behaviour is permitted, although the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable, unless they are justified by context.

As long as it doesn't dwell on the infliction of pain or injury, violence is allowed and can be strong. However, the strongest gory images are likely to be unacceptable. Strong sadistic violence is also likely to be unacceptable. Detailed verbal references to sexual violence is allowed, but the depiction of sexual violence must be discrete and justified by context. In reference to threat and horror, this is permitted. However, a sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat is unlikely to be acceptable.

Poster analysis introduction

I am going to conduct research and analysis towards the conventions of film posters. I have looked at five different posters from a variety of genres, in order to see if there are similarities within the conventions. This will help my understanding of the depth in film posters, thus benefitting me when I am making my own.  Below are the five posters, each of different genres, which I chose to analyse the conventions of: 1) La La Land  2) Spider Man  3) Insidious 2  4) Hangover 2  5) The Notebook

Magazine cover analysis introduction

After looking at the conventions of movie posters, I will now do the exact same, but for film magazine covers. Both film magazines I will be looking at are aimed at different audience and will both be for different front covers from a different film magazine. In terms of design and layout, I will be able to see if both film magazines share the same conventions.  Below are the two film magazine covers I will be analysing:

Evaluation - what have I learnt from my audience feedback?

Within my research and planning, I constantly had my target audience in mind. I therefore conducted several questionnaires and focus groups,  in order to gather information on what my audience expected in regards to different media texts, along with making decisions based on their feedback.  My main aim for my marketing campaign was for it to hold authenticity and realism for the audience. I questionnaires which I have included below helped me achieve this: Questionnaire for poster Questionnaire for magazine cover Questionnaire for teaser trailer Additionally, I have also conducted a series of questionnaires post production of my marketing campaign. I wanted to gather feed back from my audience to see if they felt that my poster, magazine cover and teaser trailer were sustainable, accurate and convincing.  My posters questionnaire goes as follows:  1) Was the font I used effective in portraying the nature of a horror film? If so how? 2) Did you fee...
