Existing Film Publications

I am going to analyse a variety of different film magazines, which are already on the market. I will closely look at them in terms of audience, contents and style. This will enable me to think of the most appropriate and effective style of magazine publication, which is suitable for my film. 

From my research, I have gathered information in regards to different types of film publications, all serving interests to a wide range of different audiences. All the magazines I came across contain film reviews, along with what audiences would want to know about film production. I have also learned they are all used for the promotion of upcoming films, although the types of films promoted, vary according to the type of magazine which has been published. 

Below are a few examples of existing film publications:
1) American Cinematographer
American Cinematographer is published by the American society of cinematographers. The magazine covers domestic and foreign feature productions, short films, commercials, music videos as well as focusing on television productions and the art and craft of cinematography. The purpose of this magazine is to feature interviews with directors, filmmakers and cinematographers. 











2) Little White Lies
Little White Lies is an independent film magazine. It is widely known for its unique illustrations and reinterpreting films by featuring cutting edge photography and writing. As well as this, they have changing aesthetics and style in order to get under the skin of cinema and to reflect the spirit of the cover film. 












3) Screen International 
Screen international is a multimedia film magazine. Its weekly publishes cover the international film business, and the company produces daily publications at film festivals. 













4) Fangoria 
Fangoria magazine is an internationally distributed US film fan magazine, with a teenage targetted audience. Fangoria specialises in Exploitation, Horror, Slasher and Splatter films. 











5) SFX
SFX magazine is a British magazine which covers Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror genres, in different types of medias such as video games, comics and literature. The magazine was founded in 1955 and gets published every four weeks by Future PLC. 











6) Filmmaker 

Filmmaker is a publication magazine which covers issues relating to independent films. It includes case studies, financing and distribution information, technical and production updates, festival reports, interviews with filmmakers on filmmaking as well as legal pointers. 










7) Total Film 
Total Film magazine is based in the UK and gets published 13 times a year by Future Publishing. After Empire, Total Film is the second biggest selling film magazine in Britain, mainly featuring Hollywood films. The dominant central image is usually an A-List star, or renowned character (in this issues case). Inside the magazine offers blu-ray news, DVD's, reviews and cinema features. 












8) Empire 
Empire is a British film magazine, published monthly. It is the biggest selling film magazine in Britain and is also published in Australia, Turkey, Portugal, America and Russia. Empire mainly focuses on mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, with the cover often featuring images of recognizable characters from franchise movies as well as Hollywood stars. 












9) Sight and Sound

Sight and Sound is a British magazine, publishing reviews of all film releases monthly by the British Film Institute, including those with a limited release, as opposed to most film magazines, which concentrate on those films with a general release. The magazine features a full cast and crew credit list for each reviewed film. 










10) Studio 

Studio magazine is a French cinema magazine, founded in 1987. On the studios 20th anniversary in 2007, they launched its first internet site. Studio is a digital publication available on mobiles and ipads. 














11) Cinefex 
Cinefex is a special effects professional movie magazine, one of the top ever produced. Within its pages are detailed articles about special effects in upcoming movies. Cinefex contains interviews with people involved in the film and those with behind the scenes photographs. 










12) Film Comment 
Film comment is an arts and culture magazine, featuring analysis and reviews of art house, mainstream and advant garde filmmaking from around the world. The editorial team at the magazine hosts the annual film comment selects at the film society of lincoln center. 












13) If 
If magazine is an American Science fiction magazine launched in march 1952, by Quinn publications. It was never considered to be a top science fiction magazine, yet it is moderately successful. 















14) Uncut
Uncut is a monthly magazine, launched in May 1997, aimed at men ages 25-45 and focuses on music and movies.The editor of the magazine; Allan Jones, stated there was a publishing initiative to make the audience younger. The content includes lengthy features of old albums, music and film news, reviews, all major new albums, film and DVD releases, as well as interviews with film directors. 











15) Film Journal
Film Journal was launched in 1984 and is published monthly. The magazine covers production, distribution and exhibition. It also has features on industry trends, technology, movie theatre design, International news and other topics. It is the official magazine of the industry conventions ShowEast, ShoWest, CineAsia, and Cinema Expo International. 












16) Hollywood reporter 
The Hollywood Reporter was founded in 1930 and is a multi-platform American print and digital magazine, which focuses on Hollywood television, film and entertainment industries. The magazine also contains Hollywood's intersection with Fashion, Finance, Technology, Law, Politics and Lifestyle. The magazine is owned by Elridge industries and when it was first introduced it was displayed as Hollywood's first daily entertainment trade newspaper. 










17) Movie Scope 
Movie scope publish monthly magazines, based on the international movie making business. It is owned by 3 Mills Studios and is published at major film markets, including European film market (Berlin), Marche Du Film (Cannes) and American Film Market (Los Angeles). The function of the magazine is to track independent films from development stages, up until the release date.

Evaluation - what have I learnt from my audience feedback?

Within my research and planning, I constantly had my target audience in mind. I therefore conducted several questionnaires and focus groups,  in order to gather information on what my audience expected in regards to different media texts, along with making decisions based on their feedback.  My main aim for my marketing campaign was for it to hold authenticity and realism for the audience.
